To walk a compass course, use the compass to sight along the bearing to SPRINGA displayed by the GPS. Remember to convert to magnetic degrees if your compass doesn’t have a declination adjustment. Note a landmark along the desired bearing, and walk toward it. In dense forest, you’ll probably have to pick a tree that’s close. It’s easier to walk a straight line if you pick a second tree beyond the first. When you get to the first tree, pick a third three beyond the second, and so on. If the sun is out, you can use it to help you stay on course. You can also use the lay of the land (a slight slope, etc.) to help stay on course.
