Universal Transverse Mercator is a coordinate system based on 1000-meter squares. Because it’s a rectangular system, UTM is easier to use than latitude and longitude coordinates (lat/long). All USGS maps have UTM coordinates, but many others, such as US Forest Service maps, have only lat/long. To determine lat/long coordinates accurately from a paper map, you’ll need a lat/long reader designed for your map scale.
