| Universal Transverse Mercator is a coordinate system based on 1000-meter squares. Because its a rectangular system, UTM is easier to use than latitude and longitude coordinates (lat/long). All USGS maps have UTM coordinates, but many others, such as US Forest Service maps, have only lat/long.
