A LEG UP: KEY MOUNTING IDEAS FOR YOUR KNEE

When I asked the people at Palm Radio about offering a leg mount for using its Mini-paddle in the field the company said that it would like to see what I came up with.

Here are several pictures of my efforts, which may be of interest to members of the Adventure Radio Society. I am totally satisfied with the results.

The accompanying photographs tell most of the story. Here are the materials I used:

• A portion of a discarded plastic 1 gallon paint bucket (a dry wall filler bucket - usually white - would also work) for the base support.
• A 2-inch (51mm) wide Velcro strap (found at a local home improvement store in a 2-pack)
• A mounting base from Palm.

The overall dimensions of the base support is 3.5” X 6” (~90mm x 152mm). To make the slots for the Velcro, I drilled 5/16" (8mm) holes and cut between the holes with a utility knife.

The Velcro strap was too long initially and it had to be shortened and re-sewn.

I used 6-32 stainless steel hardware (to prevent rust) with a washer on each side. The screws had to be filed down to allow the paddle to snap onto the base. As you can see, the angle of the base can be adjusted for personal preference.
